We had bid on a short sale townhouse in Orlando, FL that was listed for 58K. The commission for the realtor was around a thousand dollars. He complained that is was a lot of paperwork for not much return [an unabashed hint that a little extra would go a long way] and that there were multiple bids on the property and that we would only get 'one shot at it'. We really liked the property so we bid 68K [without the 'little extra']. The contract was signed and submitted, the mortgage company had pre-approved us so there was no problem with the financing. We heard nothing else from him repeated phone calls were met with "What? Who? I can't hear you." and a hang up. After a couple of weeks we contacted another realtor to inquire about the property and she told us that it sold a couple of weeks ago for $59K. We had offered 65K! That weasel had taken an 'under the table' commission above what was listed and dumped our contract.
